From AI’s knowledge and judgment to joint activity with people

The scope covered extends to what knowledge AI uses, how it judges and acts with that knowledge, and what results it produces in its relationships with people and with other AIs.

What questions are studied?

There are eight research areas, and they overlap. Several fields can take part together in a single project.

Lines of inquiry

What does each line of inquiry ask?

Four lines of inquiry.

  • AI’s Knowledge and Judgment

Asks under what conditions AI uses knowledge, and how it judges when things are uncertain and when goals conflict.

Questions in this line of inquiry

    • What is needed for several AIs to use the same words with the same meaning?
    • How should judgments be made when the evidence is uncertain?
    • When goals conflict, which comes first?
  • AI’s Action and Learning

Asks how AI carries out plans, learns from experience, and how far things can be entrusted to it.

Questions in this line of inquiry

    • What should be checked when AI makes plans and acts?
    • What does it mean for AI to learn from experience?
    • How far should things be left to AI, and when should one intervene?
  • AI’s Collaboration and Organization

Asks how several AIs divide roles, judge together with scattered information, and coordinate one another’s work.

Questions in this line of inquiry

    • How should roles be divided among several AIs?
    • How can judgments be made together when information is scattered?
    • How should the work of several AIs be coordinated?
  • Work That People and AI Do Together

Asks how people and AI share judgment and authority, solve problems together, and what becomes of people’s capability in work and learning.

Questions in this line of inquiry

    • How should people and AI share judgment and authority?
    • When a problem is defined anew, what can be compared?
    • What becomes of people’s capability when they work and learn with AI?
